Eco Funeral

Is green the new black? Eco Funeral

As we all become increasingly aware of our impact on the planet there is a recognized need to apply this philosophy to funerals. The ultimate goal is for a zero carbon exit – we’re not quite there yet but with a rising number of eco options available it should be possible in the not too distant future.

The most obvious area where we can opt for an eco friendly product is to choose a coffin made from biodegradable and renewable materials. These include willow, cardboard, bamboo, recycled paper, banana leaf and wool. Opting for a woodland burial is another way to keep your carbon footprint down. There are now over 270 woodland burial sites in the UK. These are areas of countryside where you can be buried or have ashes scattered. Loved ones can plant a tree or place a remembrance plaque rather than a traditional headstone.

There are currently limited environmentally friendly options for transporting the coffin – but there is increasing demand for bicycle hearses and horse drawn carriages. Hybrid hearses are in development but are unlikely to be widely available for a few years.

It is in the details of funeral planning where we can all make a difference. Replacing imported flowers with potted plants, wildflowers or British grown blooms can keep environmental impact down. Similarly, using recyclable stationery, locally sourced food at wakes or funeral teas and keeping journeys during the ceremony short.
