Funeral Flowers

Chrysanthemums Or Cricket Bats? Personalise your funeral flowers.

Traditional or modern and quirky, flowers can say a lot about you and your personality. So what is your preference – an elegant, classic arrangement or a witty tribute that raises a giggle?

For centuries flowers have been used in funeral and burial ceremonies across the world. Lilies, carnations, gladioli and chrysanthemums have ancient, traditional, symbolic meanings such as sympathy, innocence and remembrance. These meanings were once universally understood but they seem less relevant today. Many people send funeral flowers as a meaningful and appropriate show of respect and sympathy when it can be difficult to find the words to offer comfort to those bereaved.

Over the last few years there has been a shift in attitude that floral tributes don’t always have to be sombre. It is not a new phenomenon to select flowers to represent the preferences of the deceased. However, this tended to be limited to asking for favourite blooms or colours to be included in a wreath or casket display. As well as classic crosses and wreaths many florists are now happy to create bespoke floral arrangements for funerals. Nowadays, you can have flowers that represent hobbies and interests such as a horse, dartboard, cricket bat or a simple pint of beer! Innovation in floral supplies allows florists to be much more creative.

3D tributes are increasing in popularity and people are asking for more ambitious and personal creations.

This is a great way of creating a talking point or triggering a happy memory among funeral goers.

The more environmentally conscious among you may have a preference for locally grown, wild or native British plants. Modern displays can even include allotment vegetables and hedgerow finds! Wildflower arrangements can create a simple but stunning display. Last year a keen gardener requested that his wellingtons to be planted up and placed on his casket.

Flowers and floral displays are often the visual focus at a funeral and therefore the lasting image we take away. Let your choice of flowers define you!
